Dental Crown Q & A

What is a dental crown?

When it comes to both functional and cosmetic dentistry, a dental crown is a true workhorse. A crown is a cap for your tooth that’s made from materials that mimic the natural coloring of your teeth, such as porcelain or ceramic.

The team at Woodland Lakes Dental Studio turns to crowns to:

  • Cover a tooth that’s had a root canal procedure
  • Protect a severely chipped or cracked tooth
  • Camouflage a discolored tooth
  • Provide support for a bridge
  • Cover a dental implant

There are many uses for a dental crown, making it a common go-to dental tool that can solve any number of dental issues.

What is a CEREC same-day crown?

The team at Woodland Lakes Dental Studio offers CEREC same-day crowns. Traditionally, once your dentist prepares your tooth, they take an impression and send the information to a lab for custom manufacturing of your crown. With CEREC, the team at Woodland Lakes Dental Studio can accomplish all of this in just one visit thanks to advanced imaging technology and an on-site milling unit.

Using an intraoral scanner, your dental expert creates a digital impression of your tooth. From there, computer-aided design software creates the template for your tooth and sends it to the custom milling unit.

Once your crown is ready, your dental expert bonds it into place, making any adjustments necessary to ensure that your bite is correct and the new crown fits in with your existing teeth.

How do I take care of my crown?

While a crown isn’t as strong as your natural teeth, many can last up to 20 years if you take good care of the prosthetic. This means brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and rinsing regularly. You should also keep up with your regular cleaning appointments and dental check-ups so the team at Woodland Lakes Dental Studio can check the crown.

Should your crown break or crack, you simply return to Woodland Lakes Dental Studio to get fitted for a replacement.
