Home vs. Professional Teeth Whitening

A healthy smile doesn’t just mean good dental hygiene and a lack of cavities. It also involves the appearance of your teeth. If your teeth are discolored, you're probably hiding your smile as much as possible. However, there are treatments that can help you get a whiter and healthier smile.

At Woodland Lakes Dental Studio, we strive to give you the best smile possible with our many cosmetic treatments — including at-home and in-office teeth whitening. Not only do we want you to have healthy teeth, Dr. Gabriel Polo also wants you to have a beautiful smile that you can be proud to show off.

What causes discoloration of your teeth?

You might think that brushing twice a day and flossing regularly will keep your pearly whites looking their best. The truth is, even with great dental hygiene, your teeth can become discolored from a lot of different things, including:

Your teeth can also lose their sheen over time with age.

How you can make your teeth whiter

Making lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking and limiting coffee and tea, can help, but once your teeth are stained it can require actual whitening treatments to get them back to normal.

There are some methods you can use at home to help your teeth get a little more white. You can do oil pulling, which involves swishing oil around your mouth. This is an old remedy that decreases bacteria in your mouth, cutting down on plaque that can discolor your teeth.

You could also brush with baking soda, which has properties that naturally whiten teeth. It also creates an environment in your mouth that makes it hard for bacteria to grow. This isn’t an instant fix for stained teeth, but you may notice a change in weeks to months of using it.

Ultimately, if you want whiter teeth sooner rather than later, professional whitening is the way to go for safer and quicker results.

Home whitening vs. professional whitening

When you’re ready to take the leap and get your teeth whitened, there are a number of over-the-counter products on the market, but they don’t compare to the results you get from professional teeth whitening. So what's the difference between the two? The main difference is the time it takes to get results and the strength of the bleaching agent.

In-office teeth whitening

At Woodland Lakes Dental Studio, we offer quick and safe in-office teeth whitening. During this procedure, Dr. Polo uses a very strong bleaching agent to whiten your teeth. It takes about an hour for your teeth to become whiter.

Dr. Polo uses a protective gel or barrier to shield your gums from the bleaching agent.

Our professional whitening results can last up to a year or more if you steer clear of foods that stain your teeth

Home whitening trays

Another option that we offer is take-home teeth whitening trays. These use a similar bleaching agent as in-office whitening, but it's not as strong. This just means it may take days to weeks before you get noticeable results.

Dr. Polo will give you specific instructions on how to use the trays, so be sure to follow them to get optimal results.

Other at-home whitening options include whitening toothpaste, strips, and over-the-counter trays. The bleaching agents used in these products are much less effective and, if not used properly, can have side effects.

They can cause tooth sensitivity and damage to your enamel and the gums. Always make sure to check with Dr. Polo before trying over-the-counter teeth whitening products.
