Like many people, you may be wondering the best way to straighten your teeth. With the variety of options out there, it can be difficult to make a choice.
Dr. Gabriel Polo of Woodland Lakes Dental Studio can offer you some insight into the different types of orthodontic devices out there. He also offers Invisalign®, which might be just the option you’re looking for and is appropriate for people of any age looking to straighten their teeth.
Straight teeth equal a healthy mouth
You may think that having straight teeth is purely cosmetic. The truth is, crooked teeth can actually cause problems in your mouth. This can lead to multiple dental visits, which can get pricey over time.
Crooked teeth are much harder for you or your kids to keep clean. This is because there are more places for tricky plaque to hide. If you can't properly keep your teeth clean and free of plaque, the risk for decay and cavities increases.
Misaligned teeth can also put pressure on your temporomandibular joints, which can lead to jaw pain and headaches. Another problem with crooked teeth is wear on the teeth due to misalignment. Straight teeth can actually help with chewing and proper digestion of food, which is especially important for your growing teen.
When you think of orthodontics, you probably think of unsightly metal braces taking over your smile. However, with Invisalign, the metal is out and clear aligners are in. There are many advantages to these types of aligners, including:
- They’re invisible
- They take about the same time to correct teeth as traditional braces
- They require fewer dentist visits and less maintenance
Invisalign can be used by just about anyone, no matter if you’re young or older. Invisalign is a great option for your teenager because of the versatility to take the aligners out to brush, floss, and eat. No more worrying about eating sticky treats that are a definite no with metal braces. Your teen can even play their favorite sports by taking the aligners out if needed.
The aligners can even be used by your younger children, as long as they’re at least 6 years old. It can help treat minor to more complicated teeth problems in children, such as crowding and spacing issues. The best part is, your child can remove the aligners to continue proper dental hygiene.
The first step to Invisalign is to make an appointment with Dr. Polo, where he’ll take advanced digital imaging of your mouth. This will help him come up with a plan for your teeth. That information then gets sent to a lab that custom makes your aligners to fit you or your child’s mouth perfectly.
Once you get the aligners, you’ll wear them at least 22 hours per day. This allows your teeth to gradually move into position, while still allowing you to take the aligners out to eat or clean. Every one to two weeks, you get new aligners to wear.
Invisalign's aligners are made from something called SmartTrack®. This material moves the teeth gently, while applying slightly firm pressure to ensure proper alignment. This allows for less pain than with traditional straightening options, which teens and children will especially appreciate.
Is Invisalign right for you?
There are many misalignment issues that Invisalign can correct, such as:
- Cross bite
- Open bite
- Crowded teeth
- Gapped teeth
Dr. Polo will discuss your specific needs at your initial appointment to see if Invisalign is right for you or your child’s dental needs.
As with most things, Invisalign does take time — about the same amount of time as traditional braces. It can take anywhere from 6 to 24 months, depending on the severity of your misaligned teeth. For kids and teens, the time is about the same, also dependent on the type of issue being treated.
As long as you follow the plan created by Dr. Polo and wear the aligners for at least 22 hours a day, you should see stunning results in no time.
